Sheriff

The patrol section is responsible for patrol coverage of all roads within Tallapoosa County. Tallapoosa County has approximately 700 square miles which account for approximately 1000 square miles of roads. The patrol division consists of fourteen (14) full-time deputies and two (2) part-time deputies. This division is also responsible for serving civil papers, courtroom security, prisoner transports, building checks, citizen assists along with other various duties.

The Criminal Investigations unit is responsible for conducting criminal investigations, applicant background checks, and other various duties. The division consists of four (4) full-time, which also includes a supervisor.

The Narcotics Task Force is a multi-agency organization to include members of the Alexander City Police, Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department, Dadeville Police, Tallassee Police and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. The Sheriff’s Department has two (2) investigators assigned to the task force.

It is our legal obligation, as operators of the Tallapoosa County Jail, to provide a safe, sanitary, secure place of detention for all persons committed to the Tallapoosa County Jail. To assure the constitutional confinement of those persons committed to the custody of the jail either to await trial or upon sentencing of the courts and to ensure that all inmates are tested in accordance with the established laws of the United States of America and the State of Alabama.

The jail is operated by twenty-four (23) full-time staff and one (1) part-time that consist of the following:

• 1 Jail Administrator
• 1 Lieutenant
• 4 Shift Supervisors
• 1 Secretary
• 15 Correctional Officers
• 1 Full-time Nurse
• 1 Part-time Nurse

The following is an overview of the activities for the Jail Division for 2024:

Communications consist of eight (8) full-time communications officers, and one (1) part-time including (1) supervisor providing 24-hour service equipped with Enhanced 9-1-1 (E911) capable of receiving calls from all residences within the county. The communication officers’ dispatches for five (5) Law Enforcement agencies in the county, thirteen (13) volunteer fire departments, first responders, one (1) ambulance services and one (1) rescue squads. The communication officers handle all incoming telephone calls, data entry, warrants, and other related duties.

Yellow Dot Program: Designed to assist citizens following automobile accidents when they might not be able to communicate for themselves.  All paperwork can be completed at the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office or the Alexander City Police Department.

RAD (Resisting Aggression thru Defense): A program specifically designed for children ages 5-7 and 8-10. This program is an awareness and self-defense program designed to educate your child of the dangers of strangers and ideas that they can use for the prevention of abduction.

R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense Training): An awareness and self-defense program designed specifically for women.

Neighborhood Watch Programs: Designed to ensure neighbors are aware of steps they may take to protect themselves and the community. Give them tips and suggestions about making their area safer for themselves and their families.

D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness Resistance Education): Specifically designed to make your 6th grade student aware of the dangers of Drug use. It not only informs and educates it ensures that your child is aware of the consequences of Drugs, Alcohol and violence and offers them substitutes and alternatives. This program also provides the child with ways to deal with peer pressure and alternate ways to say NO.

School Resource Officer: This program places a Deputy Sheriff in the school system so that he can be available to assist students when necessary as well as providing a positive role model for them.

Handgun Familiarization Course: Designed specifically for all individuals who own or plan to purchase a firearm. From safety, cleaning, legal considerations to the actual use of the weapon.  This training includes personal instruction, individual instruction on the range to ensure a safe and enjoyable learning environment.

Crime Stoppers: A program designed for citizens to be able to report a crime and remain anonymous as well as receiving a cash reward when the tip leads to arrest and/or conviction.  Anyone who sees a crime or having information is encouraged to call Central Alabama Crime Stoppers at: (334)-215-STOP (7867)
