Sheriff Jimmy Abbett

Jimmy Abbett, a Tallapoosa County native has been in law enforcement for the past 55 years and is currently serving in his eighth term as Sheriff of Tallapoosa County. Sheriff Abbett’s career began in 1968 as a State Trooper Cadet. In 1970, he was promoted to the rank of Trooper and assigned to the Highway Patrol Division. In 1973, he was assigned to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, a division of the Alabama Department of Public Safety. He remained in the A.B.I. division as a field agent where he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and Sergeant. In 1989, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, serving as the Operational Officer for the Alabama Bureau Investigation. In1991, he was promoted to the rank of Captain assigned to the Service Division with the Alabama Department of Public Safety as the Commander of the Alabama Criminal Justice Training Center. In 1992, he was reassigned to the Administrative Division while serving as Commander of the Criminal Intelligence Center for the Alabama Department of Public Safety. In 1993, he was appointed by the Governor to serve as the Assistant Director for the Alabama Department of Public Safety. Sheriff Abbett retired from the Alabama Department of Public Safety in 1994 after 25 years. In 1994 the citizens of Tallapoosa County elected Sheriff Abbett to the Office of Sheriff. Sheriff Abbett is … committed to the training needs for not only the department, but also the law enforcement agencies throughout the State of Alabama serving as the Chairman of the Alabama Peace Officers and Training Commission, committed to the citizens of Tallapoosa County to provide professional law enforcement service. Chief Deputy Chad Jones

Chief Deputy Chad Jones was born and raised in Alexander City. Chad graduated from Benjamin Russell High School, attended Central Alabama Community College and transferred to Troy University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in criminal justice. He currently lives in Alexander City with his family. Chad has made a career out of serving and protecting Tallapoosa County over the last twenty years. He began his law enforcement career as a deputy for Sheriff Jimmy Abbett, transferring three years later into Criminal Investigations for seven years. During this time, Chad managed the counties sex offender registry and attended SWAT school where he gained his certification and served as an operator until 2024. After his seven years with the criminal investigation’s unit, Chad transferred over to the Narcotics Division where he served for nine years. Prior to being promoted to the Chief Deputy position, Chad held the position of Sergeant Investigator and was the Coordinator of the Tallapoosa County Narcotics Task Force. Chad looks forward to continuing his service to Tallapoosa County as Chief Deputy.


Lieutenant Ray Arrington

Lt. Ray Arrington began his career at the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department in 2001 with the Corrections Division. In June of 2002 Lt. Arrington started as a Deputy Sheriff in the Patrol Division. After two years, Lt. Arrington was promoted to Patrol Sergeant. Lt. Arrington was a patrol sergeant for eighteen years and then in January 2020 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and serves as the Chief Investigator. Lt. Arrington has been dedicated to serving the citizens of Tallapoosa County since the start of his career and continues to do so.


Jail Administrator Al Wilson

Jail Administrator Al Wilson was employed with the Tallapoosa County Sheriff Department on February 14, 2009 as a Corrections Officer in the jail. On March 10, 2010 he was promoted to Corrections Sergeant. On October 14, 2011 he was promoted to Patrol Deputy and on September 12, 2015 was promoted to Patrol Sergeant. On June 1,2022 Al was promoted to Jail Administrator of the Tallapoosa County Sheriff Department.
