The department is responsible for answering emergency calls, conducting criminal investigations, civil process service, courthouse security, prisoner transports, patrol and other designated duties. Tallapoosa County has over 700 square miles with approximately 1000 miles of roads and a population of 42,000. The department currently employs a total of fifty-seven (57) full-time employees and thirteen (13) part-time employees in various positions. The department has twenty-five (25) full-time sworn deputy sheriffs and two (2) part-time deputy sheriff. The Tallapoosa County Jail serves as the detention facility for pre-trial felony defendants, convicted felons and the defendants convicted of misdemeanor offenses in the county. Twenty-four (24) full-time employees and two (2) part-time employee operate the jail, providing a safe and secure place of detention for all committed to the jail. The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department consists of several divisions, including investigations, patrol, and crime prevention, that provide professional services to the citizens of the county. Department Divisions Patrol The patrol section is responsible for patrol coverage of all roads within Tallapoosa County. Tallapoosa County has approximately 700 square miles which account for approximately 1000 square miles of roads. The patrol division consists of fourteen (14) full-time deputies and two (2) part-time deputy. This division is also responsible for serving civil papers, courtroom security, prisoner transports, building checks, citizen assists along with other various duties. Arrest: 6 Alarm Calls 534367 Investigations The Criminal Investigations unit is responsible for conducting all criminal investigations within Tallapoosa county as well as applicant background checks, and Felony Registrations, Evidence and Property control along with other various duties. This Division is also responsible for the registration and monitoring of all registered sex offenders as well as ensuring that the Project Life Saver program is monitored to ensure the safety of all the clients. This division consists of Three (3) full time investigators and a Supervisor. The following is an overview of the activities for the criminal investigative division for 2022: Criminal Investigations Opened: 96 Criminal Investigations Closed: 140 Number of Arrests: 105 Number of Persons Arrested: 45 Narcotics Task Force The Narcotics Task Force is a multi-agency organization to include members of the Alexander City Police, Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department, Dadeville Police, Tallassee Police and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. The Sheriff’s Department has two (2) investigators assigned to the task force. The following is an overview of the activities of the task force for 2022: Cases Opened: 343 Cases Closed: 324 Number of Arrests: 806 Number of Persons Arrested: 321 The following are the seizures made by the task force for 2019: Marijuana: 5330 grams $37,711.00 Cocaine: 219 grams $22,900.00 Ecstacy: 303 grams $7,575.00 Synthetic Marijuana: 1149 grams $5,745.00 Methamphetamine: 1164 grams $116,400.00 U.S Currency $57,515.00 Pharmaceuticals $2,664.00 Firearms: 48 Vehicles: 5 Jail It is our legal obligation, as operators of the Tallapoosa County Jail, to provide a safe, sanitary, secure place of detention for all persons committed to the Tallapoosa County Jail. To assure the constitutional confinement of those persons committed to the custody of the jail either to await trial or upon sentencing of the courts and to insure that all inmates are tested in accordance with the established laws of the United States of America and the State of Alabama. In order to better manage the jail facility. Video conferencing capabilities, which provide for a safe and cost effective way for certain criminal matters to be handled within the jail between the judges, lawyers and inmates. Last year over 264 video conferences were held between the courts and inmates. The jail is operated by twenty-four (23) full-time staff and one (1) part-time that consist of the following: 1 Jail Administrator 1 Lieutenant 4 Shift Supervisors 1 Secretary 15 Correctional Officers 1 Full-time Nurse 1 Part-time Nurse The following is an overview of the activities for the Jail Division for 2018: 2022 Yearly Booking: 1810 Average Daily Population: 136 Average Monthly Booking: 151 Video Conferencing: 402 2018-2019 Budget: 1,969,591.00 Communications Communications consists of eight (8) full-time communications officers, and one (1) part time including (1) supervisor providing 24-hour service equipped with Enhanced 9-1-1 (E911) capable of receiving calls from all residence within the county. The communication officers’ dispatches for four (4) Law Enforcement agencies in the county, thirteen (13) volunteer fire departments, first responders, four (4) ambulance services and two (2) rescue squads. The communication officers handle all incoming telephone calls, data entry, warrants, and other related duties. Other programs are available upon request. Yellow Dot Program: Designed to assist citizens following automobile accidents when they might not be able to communicate for theirselves. All paperwork can be completed at the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office or the Alexander City Police Department. RAD (Resisting Aggression thru Defense): A program specifically designed for children ages 5-7 and 8-10. This program is an awareness and self defense program designed to educate you child of the dangers of strangers and ideas that they can use for the prevention of abduction. R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense Training): An awareness and self defense program designed specifically for women. Neighborhood Watch Programs: Designed to ensure neighbors are aware of steps they may take in order to protect their selves and community. Gives them tips and suggestions on making their area safer for their selves and their families. D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness Resistance Education): Specifically designed to make your 6th grade student aware of the dangers of Drug use. It not only informs and educates it ensures that your child is aware of the consequences of Drugs, Alcohol and violence and offers them substitutes and alternatives. This program also provides the child with ways to deal with peer pressure and alternate ways to say NO. School Resource Officer: This program places a Deputy Sheriff in the school system so that he can be available to assist students when necessary as well as providing a positive role model for them. Protecting your Child On-Line: This program is a seminar taught to parents and adults on the dangers of the internet and how to protect your child when using a computer. It gives alternate sites, lists the dangers of chat rooms, informs parents of patterns and much more. Handgun Familiarization course: Designed specifically for all individuals who own or plan to purchase a firearm. From safety, cleaning, legal considerations to the actual use of the weapon. This training includes personal instruction individual instruction on the range to ensure a safe and enjoyable learning enviroment. Crime Stoppers: A program designed for citizens to be able to report a crime and remain anonymous as well as receiving a cash reward when the tip leads to the arrest and/or conviction. Anyone seeing a crime or having information is encouraged to call, Central Alabama Crime Stoppers at: (334)-215-STOP (7867) Resources Sex Offenders Pursuant to Legislative Act 98-489, which signed into law on August 1st, 1998, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department must notify residents within 2000 feet of the residence of a sex offender who has established a residence in your neighborhood. This information will be maintained by the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department and is available for inspection and identification purposes to the general public during the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
